Is Suicide the Solution?

get-a-life
Few days back, I got a news that one of my professor committed suicide. I was totally shocked to hear that. He was a gem of a person, the happy-go-lucky types. Since then, hundreds of question are not seeming to stop popping up in my mind. After all, when someone we know /knew takes such a step, totally shocks us. It’s not so easy to gulp the fact and accept the truth that s/he’s no more.
I always wondered that what it is that drives people to commit suicide. Whenever I hear /read about someone committing suicide, the first question that pops up in my mind is what kind of problems do those people have that they are forced to take such a drastic step. Is it the problem that is a problem or is their ability to handle problem? Confused? :?: I mean it’s not at all easy to commit suicide. Where do they get so much courage from? The courage to just lie down on a railway track? So much willpower to just jump off a tall building or even the easiest option like its said, eat poison or some sleeping pills. The easiest option too, does not seem any easier to me, forget about the rest of them. (that does not mean I’m planning to commit suicide, just saying). It’s definitely not everybody’s cup of tea.

Anyway, the point of this post is for those people who really hate their lives or everyone /everything around them and eventually end up committing suicide. Are these people really mentally or emotionally weak? Because had it been so, where would they have so much courage and willpower to take any of the above mentioned step. The point I’m trying to make clear is that when they have so much courage and willpower, why not use it in a positive way. I know it’s easier said then done, but it’s definitely worth it. Sometimes people want to go back to their past and start things all over again. I don’t understand what’s the point in saying this when every sane human being knows that this is not going to happen. Mistakes happen. If you make a mistake and you wish to go back and change it, you’re mistaken again. Because what’s the guarantee that you would not make the same mistake again. :?: It’s simple– You can’t change what you’ve done. So instead of dreaming to go back in the past and change things, Why not turn the clock around and start a new life and try to improve yourself.

The prime factors responsible for people being suicidal are depression, loneliness, etc. The reasons that a person becomes depressed are loss of control over his/her life and emotions, loss of hope about a positive future.

don't-give-up

Teenagers commit suicide for stupid reasons like failing in examination or even the worst, when their boyfriend /girlfriend ditches them. I don’t understand, is any examination important than your life? Is the person whom you know only since a few months or probably years, more important than your family?
“Problems, are to be solved. They are a part of our lives. All that matters about life is getting ready for the next one.” Only worrying about what you’ve never had or what you’re going to have is useless. Life sucks; everyone knows that, but you’ve got to have faith in what you’re doing. If you can’t handle the truth now, you never can because things only get harder, not easier. Drugs, alcohol, and sleeping pills can always cheat your current situation for a while. They’d take you to your imaginary world where there’d be no place for frustration, pain, worries like that of the real world. But finally you hit reality and you’ve to live with it. SO. just be happy with what you have and care about the people who are around you. Don’t wait for others to make you feel better or give you what you want. Do it yourself. The answers lie in our day-to-day efforts to help ourselves.
Suicide is not a solution, it is only an end before a solution can be found. It’s just a permanent solution of a temporary problem. It can neither be considered as an option, for an option means we have a choice but death deprives us of both, option and choice. Death is an irreversible act that does not end the pain, for it remains in those who are left behind.

Life is meaningful only when it’s painful and you still survive through it. If you were born to be a person with everything you wanted and without pain, you would be nothing at all. So, don’t lose hope. Don’t ever give up!

first of all, yes ur absolutely right. But have you ever spared a thought of what actually drives them to such a situation? It is obviously a problem but its a problem on which they’ve little or no control and worse, nobody is willing to help them out. They stare deep into hopelessness. If those who stay back and are left hurt by their demise, why don’t they step in and save him now? They always have that option.

Not everybody’s born a soldier to battle anything and everything that comes their way and get out. Most people seek support and help when faced with a problem. Its usually the lack of helping hand that forces them to see the hopelessness. If they’re gonna miss him after his death, they might as well avoid it.

Yes, I agree that sometimes situations are out of control. But that’s the whole point, people need to have control over themselves in such times and not lose hope.
And what if such people don’t let others know about their problems? So, how are other who care for them supposed to know the problems they’re facing and help them come out of it?

      Peace! :)

Hmm, true that Suicide is not the solution, but sometimes, anxiety and purposelessness can drive you to think about it. It causes loneliness and you feel like you have no one to live for. At such times, it’s good to have a close person with you!

Life has a lot to offer but only if we are willing to receive :)

    Enjoy! ;)

Yes, almost everybody might be facing such problem once in their lifetime. Such thoughts are, I guess very natural. But having control over them is the whole point.
Yes, having a friend /family member with you can definitely be helpful in such times, only if you allow them to.

      You, too! ;)

Well, that really saved me from committing suicide… I’d just heard.. “mann ka radio” and all I wanted to do was jump off my balcony! :P Sorry … couldn’t help but mention that.. The song really makes you feel suicidal. Seriously.. Uh, never mind.. ‘Nuff about that song…

“Do you know what’s worth fighting for?
When it’s not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away
    And you feel yourself suffocating?”

Its all about figuring out what’s important.. Like you said flunking in exams or being dumped are too silly reasons to kill yourself! (and if flunking was that big a deal.. well, I would’ve died when I was class 9th! Guess, I’m too shameless LoL)
And yeah, these are lyrics of a song by Green Day. Its called 21 guns. :)

And when you say, “Where do they get such courage from to do such a thing”.. I disagree. If they had the courage or whatever, they’d rather face whatever their problems!
Running away is always easier than facing stuff.

And I just realized, thoda zyada comment ho gaya :P
    So.. I’m gonna shut up!
Nice post… (as if you dint know :P hehe)
    Cheers,
    Peace! \m/

Wow… Aditi… i am too impessed with your way of writing and putting down your thoughts so so well. As you know such topics are very close to my heart. And you have balanced every thing so well.

Okay what i would like to add here, is that its not just ‘they’ who go through such situations where in they feel left out and have to take an unfortunate step. Each one of us has gone through situations where we often feel as if lifes not turning out the way we want it to be. We often tend to do things which we should not. We lose interest in certain things which used to bring a smile on our face. We might not have taken extreme steps in such situationsnbut certainly our thinking does get inclined towards it. And If someone wants to differ on this and say “No i havent felt so at all”, well you are fooling yourself…

Havng such mentality has nothing to do with “strength” of mind. It has got a biological basis. Just the way diabetes has something to do with sugar level, suicidal mentality is also a result of a brain chemical “Serotonin” imbalance. So the sooner the person approaches a support group and gets proper intervention, the better is the chance to get back to the routine daily life…

And by support group i mean, families, friends, counsellors, psychiatrists, helplines… But its not just a one way affair… it has to be both ways… the need of the hour is AWARENESS…

Awareness that depression can strike anybody… and i do mean it… ANYBODY!!!

Thanks Aditi for bringing up such topics…. BRAVO!
